Sometimes when I'm writing -- especially at the beginning of a story--- I feel like I'm riding horseback in a thick forest, and I don't know if I should trust the horse to take me back to the stable or if I should grab reins and steer the horse back on the path.
How can you tell when a story is organically developing in an unexpected and better direction, and when it's veering way off course? I guess the real question is...how do you know if you're on a reliable horse or not?
